Hudson Valley 27 - Village Lions 10 |
||
|
The DIII Hudson Valley Rebels defeated the upper DII Village Lions
this past Saturday with a score of 27 ~ 10. This is the first Rebel
victory over the long-standing Lions since the club was established
almost a decade ago.
The Rebels would score first as the forwards fought their way through
the Lions. Rob Palmer of Montgomery and Joe Dabritz of Margaretville
orchestrated the mauling and rolling attack that would result in
Palmer's first try of the year and put the Rebels up 5 ~ 0. The forwards
running attack was led by "Man of Match" recipient Mike Greenblatt of
Hyland, Patrick English of Goshen, Chris Ray of Glenham and Bill Castellane
of Salisbury Mills. Veteran rugger Mark Cozzupoli of Hyland was called
upon just before game time to fill in and gave the Rebels the much needed
full game support. David Mowen of Fishkill, Nate Brooks of Newburgh and
Jay Kimler of Montgomery drew in Lion defenders which opened up many
overload opportunities for the backs.
Nate Conkey of West Point highlighted the day with a try even after being
met ferociously by one the Lion's forwards. In order to maintain the lead,
the Rebels would kick for space that was complimented with the open-
field tackle support of Paul Pastorini of Fishkill and Alresch Jaywardeena of
Newburgh. Jon Jones of Hyland finished the day with 12 points as the
Rebels relied on his foot on penalties and conversions. The running threat
of Mariano Choconi of Greenwood Lake would force the Lion's to kick for
touch instead of keeping the ball in play resulting in the Rebel's 3rd win this
year with a final score of 27 ~ 10.
The secondary Rebel "B" match would prove to be just as vicious and tested many Rebel players who would play a 2nd game under and unforgiving sun. Returning veterans, Eric Nicholson of Glenham, Damien Brady of Newburgh, Bart Lansky of Beacon combined with newcomer Steven Kissenger of Montgomery exhibited the Rebels strength in depth against a frustrated Village Lions. In the end, the Lions would win the second match with the help of many reserves. Scoring Summary:
