The Hudson Valley Rebel Rugby Football Club is the Hudson Valley’s premiere Rugby club and with your help and generous contributions we look forward to promoting this club’s history of camaraderie, community and athleticism.
American rugby first started in 1874, when Harvard University hosted Montreal’s McGill University. Rugby was soon included as a sport in four Olympic Games (1900, 1908, 1920, 1924), and the United States claimed victories in both the 1920 and 1924 Games. After the 1924 Olympics, however, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) removed rugby as an Olympic sport. Without the Olympic incentive, the sport’s growth in America collapsed and the game remained dormant for the next half century.
However, the sport then enjoyed a renaissance, beginning in the 1960s and continuing through the 1970s. Today, USA Rugby has over 2,000 men’s, women’s, university and under-19 clubs, with more than 50,000 members. A local men’s rugby club, the Hudson Valley Rebels has forty active and alumnus members from numerous counties in the Hudson Valley. Our rugby club was founded in 2000 and is a member of the New York State Metropolitan Rugby Union.
The Hudson Valley Rebels travel and host competing rugby teams throughout the Northeast. primarily from Connecticut, New York City, Long Island and New Jersey. The Hudson Valley Rebels are currently seeking sponsorships from local businesses in order to provide the financial assistance needed for rugby to continue to grow in the Hudson Valley. Besides playing competitive rugby, our mission is to promote the game of rugby in the Hudson Valley at all levels of play; to assist team members and participants in their various forms of involvement with the game; and to encourage and facilitate the involvement of as many people as possible in rugby activities.
Your sponsorship will assist the club with jerseys, equipment, field maintenance, tournament fees, advertisement, and recruitment to expand the club.
