The Hudson Valley Rebels battled their way to the semi-finals at
this year's Can-Rugby Tournament hosted in Saranac Lake, NY. Hudson Valley Men finished within the top 4 among 32 premiere social clubs that came from all corners of North America. To be successful at the Can-Am Tournament is to be successful as a Rugby club. Hudson Valley kicked-off the day early Saturday morning against the Vandals Rugby club which is a combined side of traveling players from upper-division teams primarily of the East Coast. A combination of try's, penalty kicks and conversions by Jon Jones of Highland and Patrick English of Goshen would just be enough to defeat the Vandals 21 - 17. The forwards were led by Team Captain Jay Kimler of Walden, Joe Dabritz of Margaritville, Frank Wens of Walden and Rob Palmer of Montgomery where they collectively pushed over a very experienced side of players. In order to move on to the quarter-finals, the Division III Rebels would have to overcome the 2006 1st Place Division II Union Rugby club from New Jersey. Again, the forwards were called upon to put a defensive front deep into Rebel territory on several occasions thanks to the combined effort and devastating tackling by Chris Soi of Cold Spring, Mike Greenblatt of Highland, Al Rushin of Newburgh, Jon Delfini of Milton, and Alec Smassanow of Poughkeepsie. With only seconds left, Hudson Valley would tie the game on a series of long passes out into the waiting arms of Justin Bard of Poughkeepsie who would take it for the score and send the game into sudden death overtime. Hudson Valley would finally take out Union on a penalty kick to win the match 11 - 8. Hudson Valley was then scheduled to play the Brockport Rugby club to decide who would move onto the semi-finals and earn the right to play on Sunday. Brockport made several advances and had Hudson Valley locked up in our own end until a huge hit, one of many on the day, from Nate Conkey of West Point forced a turnover which Jon Jones returned the length of the field to put the Rebels up 5 - 0. From there the combined running attack of Chris Ray of Beacon, Paul Pastorini of Fishkill, Tim Duffy of West Point would be enough to send Hudson Valley to their first semi-final appearance with a 17 - 7 victory. Early Sunday morning, the battle-troden Rebels squared off against the Brandywine Rugby Club. Hudson Valley kept the game close but time would run out before the Rebels were able to establish their offensive. Brandywine would move on with a score of 13 - 3.
